A new survey reveals that for singles, the loneliest day of the week is marked by feelings of isolation, neglect and insignificance that go way beyond what you might expect. Some people will think it’s Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve – but it’s actually Halloween.

And it doesn’t help that the United States has been experiencing an epidemic of loneliness for some time, especially in New York City.

According to the New York City Health Department, more than half of New Yorkers feel lonely “sometimes.”

Physician and former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recommends that everyone should “take small steps every day to strengthen our relationships.”

“The impact of social disconnection on mortality is similar to that of smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, and even greater than … obesity and physical inactivity,” Murthy said.
