Japan’s first ghost story still haunts us
this trivial matter and Japanese bookmarker Chronicles, all completed within 8 yearsth century, is the oldest text in Japan. These collections of genealogies, myths, and legends were intended to trace the royal line back to the gods and legitimize their divine right to rule. But these two books do much more than that – they preserve thousands of years of stories, including the first tales of fear and terror in Japanese history. Even if you’ve never read it, you’ve probably sensed its echoes still lingering in modern Japanese horror today – the old myth of reading beauty.

The gods Izanami and Izanagi are both recorded in trivial matter and Japanese bookmarker As the creator of Japan, and Izanami Almost the birthplace of most of Japan’s islands exist. Their happily married life is what a modern horror film would call a setup, followed by the “violent” moment when Izanami gives birth to Kagami and is fatally burned from the inside. But, like modern horror, “death” is just the beginning. Izanami descended into the underworld, called “Yomi” or “Yomo”, meaning “land”spit game meat“.
Izanami missed his wife so much that he ventured into Yomi to bring Izanami back. she tell him: “[Y]Your presence fills me with awe and makes me long to be back with you. I will talk to the spirit of the land for a while. In the meantime, don’t look at me! ”
You don’t need to take a semester’s worth of creative writing classes to figure out what happens next: Izanagi lights a fire, looks at his wife, discovers that she has become immortal, and “Wriggling maggots crawled in and out of her body.“The angry zombie goddess sends out the demonic Hell Witch (also described as a bit rude in older translations”ugly women”) after Izanagi barely escapes Yomi.
This is where Yomi’s story ends and the Japanese horror story begins.

Dark places cast long shadows
Yomi appears as early as the first volume of both books trivial matter and Japanese bookmarkerwhich means that Japanese literature actually started with horror stories, and this kind of thing has an impact. For centuries, four eyes or Jiu Yu Hell witches are used as bogeymen—or, more accurately, bogeyfemale — designed to scare Japanese children, while the rest of the myth makes people think about what adult should be afraid.
Some may be surprised by the biological nature of early Japanese legends. This country of forests and mountains was not created with a snap of the heavens, but was born from the body of a goddess who was left to decay and decay.
It’s interesting because, as we mentioned beforeJapan isn’t really afraid of zombies tangible monster. The story of Izanami and Izanagi is not about gods obeying the laws of nature. Rather, it is about how nature—as the true offspring of the gods—is sacred. And, as we have seen, divinity can be angry and terrifying.
in japanese horror moviesmalevolent creatures may be ghosts, but they are usually associated with nature and the elements. This may be Sadako from ring Hega coconut comes from resentment Carrying the lingering theme of water. Yumi could also explain why the two ghosts are nearly unstoppable, like so many Japanese horror icons. Because, ultimately, so does Izanami. Her husband escaped but never escaped beat His immortal wife still awaits in the underworld. Or maybe…she’s right behind you.

However, many of them were eventually redeemed and restored to “August spirit,” probably because Japanese horror films work best with women. It started with the undead Izanami and the Hell Witch and continued with almost every famous Japanese ghost story featuring a female protagonist.
