The work of 12-step can be divided into two parts: helping others recover from addiction, and practicing 12-step principles in all our affairs. The first part is helping others, which can be done in a variety of ways. One common avenue is to sponsor a newcomer’s recovery. In case you’re wondering, a sponsor’s job is to understand a newcomer’s addiction problem as thoroughly as possible and guide that person through the 12-step process. (If you are a new sponsor and suddenly find that you are not sure how to proceed, just check with your own sponsor to see how he or she would handle things.)
